Alan and Levi engaged modern-day Hasidic master
and founder of the Jewish Renewal movement, Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, about his new book, A Heart Afire: Stories and Teachings of the Early Hasidic Masters (co-authored with his student/associate, Netanel Miles-Yepez, a scholar of comparative religion). A Heart Afire explores many of the lesser-known stories and teachings of the first three generations of Hasidism, especially those of the Ba’al Shem Tov, his heirs and the students of his successor, the Maggid of Mezritch. The book includes some of the more radical teachings of well-known Hasidic masters, and insights that connect them to the ecological, ecumenical, and feminist values of the modern world. The stories, and reflections on them, present different perspectives of living in love, service and truth. A Heart Afire is a wonderful  book that helps us remember that the unconditionally loving presence of God is within and guiding us every moment of our lives.
